   Constant Nymph The Remastered
Unavailable for over sixty years, the lost classic returns at last. For many decades, the closest people could come to experiencing this timeless tale of love, tragedy and inspiration was through Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s rousing, luscious and lauded score – but no more! Now, all can open their hearts to The Constant Nymph. Joan Fontaine delivers one of her finest performances playing Tessa, a teenaged free spirit locked in battle with her complicated, sophisticated cousin Florence (Alexis Smith) over the love of Lewis (Charles Boyer), an impoverished, gifted composer. Lewis is married to Florence, but young Tessa loves Lewis so completely he finds himself drawn to her more and more. Tessa is soon transformed, first into Lewis’ muse, and then into something more; while Florence’s jealousies cage her in a competition with a child she can’t hope to win. Peter Lorre adds to the magic, shining in a rare, sympathetic supporting role.

Robert Siodmak (The Killers, The Spiral Staircase) directs, capturing the grandeur of red-velvet gambling halls and the desperate seediness of cramped pawnshops.

Bold. Brassy. Beautiful. And blonde! Joan Blondell added snap and sauce to every feature she appeared in, whether as a delectable leading lady or as a powerhouse character actress. In the first of this pair of pre-Code capers, Joan Blondell mixes it up with Pat O’Brien in I’ve Got Your Number as a telephonic twosome who use their wired wiles when they cross lines with some caustic crooks. While in the second outing, Joan plays another kind of ‘working gal’ altogether, an ex-hoofer working the grift down Cuba way with gal pal Glenda Farrell, posing as a pair of Havana Widows. Unfortunately, one of the ‘widows’ finds herself falling for the son of their sugar daddy – what’s a poor working girl to do?

   Young Winston
Richard Attenborough’s examination of the early life of Winston Churchill—up until his early days at Parliament, before his marriage––is a fascinating look at the formative years of one of the greatest politicians and most influential world leaders in recent history. Played by Simon Ward (All Creatures Great and Small and TV’s “The Tudors), young Churchill is ambitious and over-eager, with a tendency toward boastful over-exaggeration and opportunism, all of which served him well in overturning the low expectations of his father. The film flashes back through three main periods of Churchill’s life narrated by the older, knowing Churchill (well-voiced by Ward, based on Churchill’s own autobiography). In boyhood and adolescence, Churchill’s self-consumed parents, Lord Randolph (Robert Shaw, A Man for All Seasons) and American-born Lady Jennie (Anne Bancroft, The Graduate), are too busy with their own lives in Parliament and social engagements to see him off to boarding school, a task fulfilled by a beloved nanny. The adventure of Churchill’s years as a war correspondent and soldier is enthusiastically depicted. Anthony Hopkins, John Mills, Jack Hawkins, Patrick Magee and Ian Holm also appear in supporting roles. Newly remastered.

Two graduates of that smash hit – Connie Francis and Jim Hutton – reunite for this kooky comedy about a girl who can’t decide if she wants to be a star (she sings), a housewife (babies! ’burbs!) or an entrepreneur (she’s invented a doohickey to keep clothes from wrinkling). A host of stars – including Where the Boys Are’s George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux and Paula Prentiss – pop up in cameos. And add another well-known face: Johnny Carson makes his big-screen debut playing himself interviewing our ditzy heroine on The Tonight Show.

   The Fence
Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy examines the aim and effectiveness of the controversial Southern U.S. Border Barrier, a 700-mile fence erected along the more than 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border. Kennedy follows her title subject through private ranches, protected wilderness, bustling border towns and scrub desert, offering a revealing and surprising look at the story behind its construction and its ultimate impact. This 35-minute documentary takes a humorous look at the absurd ideological contradictions and misinformation that have dogged the fence from its inception. Featuring candid interviews with border patrol guards, ranchers, environmentalists and voices from both sides of the immigration controversy, the film uses humor to highlight the sometimes stark contrast between fact and political opinion. Ultimately, The Fence is a far-reaching and moving analysis of the unanticipated financial, human and environmental costs that such a project brings, wherever it stands.

There s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane
On the afternoon of July 26, 2009, Diane Schuler drove the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway in New York for nearly two miles, eventually smashing into an oncoming SUV and killing herself, her daughter, three nieces, and all three people in the other car. Only her five-year-old son survived. Diane’s autopsy revealed that she had consumed the equivalent of 10 shots of vodka, and had smoked marijuana, shortly before the accident. Yet by all accounts, Diane had no history of substance abuse or psychological problems, and was generally known to be a loving and stable wife and mother. In There’s Something Wrong with Aunt Diane, award-winning director Liz Garbus (see below) explores the facts and speculation surrounding this tragic accident. Piecing together a minute-by minute retelling of the fateful day, along with interviews with Diane’s family and friends, victims’ families, eyewitnesses, investigators, and medical and psychiatric experts, this feature-length film reveals a complex and complicated case that has left all those involved still wondering what really happened to Aunt Diane.

   Breaking Point The
Broke and with a family to support, charter-boat skipper Harry Morgan (John Garfield) makes a desperate gamble. For cash that will save his boat from creditors, he ferries gangsters to safety after a racing-track heist. But when you gamble, sometimes you lose. Tense and sinewy, The Breaking Point is a more faithful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not than the earlier Bogart-Bacall classic. Garfield, one of the screen’s great anti-heroes, makes Morgan his own in a rugged portrayal etched with anguish. Director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca), who guided Garfield to instant stardom in Four Daughters, turns the action scenes into movie dynamite, but the film’s quiet final image is the one that will haunt you.

   Obsession 1976
In 1959, affluent businessman Michael Courtland (Cliff Roberston) and his wife (Geneviève Bujold) are celebrating their tenth anniversary when his daughter and wife are kidnapped and held for ransom. The effort to rescue the girl and her mother ends tragically, and Courtland merely exists, his days consumed with guilt. Many years later, still grieving over his loss, he returns to Florence - the city where he first met his wife - where he meets a young woman who bears a remarkable resemblance to her. Set largely in New Orleans, this incredibly atmospheric thriller has a southern gothic feel with its dreamlike photography (by cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond) and deliberate pacing. Often compared to Hitchcock’s Vertigo because of its protagonist’s obsessive attempt to recreate his lost love and the score by the incomparable Bernard Herrmann, director Brian De Palma’s (Scarface, The Untouchables) undeniable obsession with cinema results in a thrilling approach to a hauntingly familiar subject. Newly remastered.

Rhapsody in Blue is a story that is as enchanting as the music of its central character, the legendary George Gershwin. Robert Alda plays the talented composer in this moving tribute to one of America’s premier musical artists. Although it was intended that the Gershwins’ eldest son, Ira, take piano lessons, it was his younger brother George who displayed a real talent for music. Following years of practice and an assortment of jobs, George worked his way from a music hall pianist to a Tin Pin Alley “song plugger. Gershwin experienced his first great success with “Swanee (sung in the film by the man who made it famous, the inimitable Al Jolson). Despite his ensuing accomplishments with hit songs and stage successes, the musical genius yearned for something greater – to create unique American music, combining the European classics and popular songs. In addition to its inspirational story, Rhapsody in Blue is musically uplifting, featuring a two hour feast of classic Gershwin.

The West is a mighty perilous place. A man needs a good horse, a trusty shootin’-iron and steady nerve. And one more thing, according to aging cowpoke Will Lane (Buddy Ebsen): a bride. Director Burt Kennedy lassos plenty of laughs as well as action in Mail Order Bride, much as he’d do later in the memorable comic westerns Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter. The story follows Lane as he plays dad to his dead friend’s rowdy son Lee (Keir Dullea). Via a mail-order catalogue, he finds the young man a widow (Lois Nettleton) with a little boy.    Mann v Ford
This feature documentary follows members of the Ramapough Mountain Indian tribe in Ringwood, NJ, in their five-year search for justice through a mass-action, tort lawsuit. From the middle ‘50s to the late ‘70s, the Ford Motor Company operated an assembly plant in Mahwah, NJ that produced millions of classic American cars. The waste from this plant, including thousands of tons of toxic lead-based paint sludge, was trucked to Ringwood and dumped into abandoned mine shafts and throughout the woods surrounding the Ramapough’s homes. The working-class residents of the area have suffered from a range of ailments, including skin problems, bleeding disorders and increased rates of cancer and miscarriage, ever since. The EPA placed Ringwood on the Federal Superfund Priorities list in the 1970’s and the site was officially “cleaned-up and taken off the list in the 1990’s. But the toxins remained. After years of community effort, the EPA admitted it had “missed nearly 80 percent of the toxins – and returned the Ramapough’s homeland to the Superfund list (the first time this has ever happened). This film charts the community’s epic battle to secure a healthy future for their children through a major lawsuit against one of the most powerful corporations in America, the Ford Motor Company, and our flawed enviro...

   Triangle Remembering the Fire
From Emmy® - winning filmmakers Marc Levin and Daphne Pinkerson, this 40-minute documentary recounts the horror of March 25, 1911, when young garment workers perished in the worst industrial accident in New York City history (up until 9/11), triggering widespread reforms and ushering in the birth of modern labor movement. In addition to riveting stories of heart break and courage told by descendents of several of the fire’s victims and survivors, the documentary explains how the tragedy occurred in the wake of an earlier strike (initiated by Triangle employees) that unified some 20,000 garment workers, but ended violence and few concessions by labor leaders. The Saturday afternoon fire, in which workers were literally locked inside their workspace by management apparently worried about theft, galvanized the public’s outrage against big business and its treatment of employees. It also forced Tammany Hall officials to work with the fledgling International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) to enact legislation improving safety, conditions and wages for garment workers – a trend that climaxed in New Deal reforms twenty years later, and is the foundation of today’s labor standards.

The Alan Bennett Collection featuring An Englishma
Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Madness of King George) is one of Britain’s most popular and prolific playwrights. Following his runaway success with Beyond the Fringe in the Sixties, he began writing for the stage, but soon found that his work transferred easily and effectively to the small screen. This collection, spanning over twenty years from 1972 to 1994, showcases Bennett’s observant eye for the absurdities of modern life and his sharp ear for dialogue. The BAFTA-winning An Englishman Abroad was inspired by Coral Browne’s real-life encounter with an eccentric Englishman in Moscow. None other than the notorious spy Guy Burgess (Alan Bates), he sends the actress on a rather counterrevolutionary mission. Also includes: The Insurance Man (with Daniel Day Lewis as Franz Kafka), A Question of Attribution (with Prunella Scales as Queen Elizabeth II and James Fox as Sir Anthony Blunt), 102 Boulevard Haussman (with Alan Bates and Janet McTeer) plus early plays A Day Out and Sunset Across the Bay (directed by Stephan Frears) and Our Winnie. Patricia Routledge (Keeping Up Appearances) stars in A Visit from Miss Prothero and A Woman of No Importance. Two film essays, Dinner at Noon and Portrait or Bust, reveal Alan Bennett’s unique onscreen presence.

   Life Begins for Andy Hardy
Big Apple, here he comes! Mickey Rooney returns as the All-American teen in this eleventh Andy Hardy film that surpassed each of the previous ten in popularity. Also back are Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy and Judy Garland in her third and final appearance as Andy’s pal, Betsy Booth. After graduating from high school, the irrepressible Andy heads for New York, giddy with visions of high finance, chic women and posh nightclubs. But the big city is tough on a small-town boy. Jobs are hard to come by. Broadway babies aren’t impressed by the boy’s gosh-and-golly charms – especially when his savings dwindle to a lone quarter. Then, too, Judge Hardy isn’t just a room away with his ever-present wisdom and moral support. Life Begins for Andy Hardy shines with the wholesome humor, swift pacing and top production values that marked the entire series. And it adds an unexpected touch: a true, heart-tugging examination of the troubles that confront an innocent lad whose dreams outweigh reality.

The other is a pent-up employee who’ll say something outrageous to a stranger for shock effect. Increasingly, Byron’s risk-taking nature takes hold. And it becomes a stranglehold when Byron is seduced by the deadly allure of Love and Money in this tantalizing thriller from James Toback (The Pick-up Artist, Bugsy). Byron accepts a million-dollar deal with a global silver magnate (Klaus Kinski). His reason says no but his passions say yes: he’s begun an illicit affair with the tycoon’s exotic wife (Ornella Muti). In return, he must persuade a former college roommate, now a Latin American strongman (Armand Assante), to stop nationalizing the silver mines. And if words fail him, bullets will do.

   Deadly Tower 1976 TVM DVD
It’s the University of Texas campus in Austin, but it seems like a war zone. Gunfire resounds from everywhere. People fall. Others scramble to flee or help the wounded. Meanwhile, from atop the school’s landmark Tower, Charles Whitman fires off round after lethal round. The Deadly Tower is the powerful story of the 1966 event that was at the time the largest one-person murder spree in U.S. history. Kurt Russell, far removed from the lighthearted roles that then made up much of his career, portrays the murderous protagonist. The film’s heroes are others: police officers (including Richard Yñiguez as Officer Ramiro Martinez), rescue personnel and various brave civilians. They faced the worst kind of terror – one who was real.

   Chandler DVD
Detectives – some officers of the law, some outside the law and all of them modern knight errants caught up in a jigsaw puzzle of death and dark deeds – were out in force on 1971 screens in Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Get Carter, Klute, Shaft and in the lesser-known but intriguing tale of hard-luck, old-school shamus Chandler. Warren Oates (The Wild Bunch) portrays the non romantic ex-P.I. (the name is an homage to detective novelist Raymond Chandler), who ditches his rent-a-cop job to return to sleuthing. His first gig: meet a woman (Leslie Caron) arriving at L.A.’s Union Station. But it turns out there’s more to the job, a lot more. Like keeping the woman and himself alive.

   Hard as Nails 2007 TV
Documentary follows self-ordained Catholic preacher Justin Fatica, who started his controversial “Hard as Nails ministry to reach troubled kids. Young people who see him preach are undoubtedly drawn to the magnetic aura of this overtly muscled, incredibly energetic and charismatic man. Repeatedly, the teenaged audiences, which often include drug abusers and self-mutilators, pour their hearts out to him. Their repeated “witnesses about startlingly graphic acts of abuse, by them and against them, are raw and painful in their brutal honesty. Fatica’s intense, in-your-face style – which includes shouting, blindfolds and mock crucifixions – has its critics, yet his passion for his faith drives him to continue to spread his message to an even greater flock in the hopes of making a difference in young people’s lives.

Hard Times at Douglass High A No Child Left Behin
"""The No Child Left Behind Act was created to boost academic levels of American students by setting standardized goals across the nation – and holding states, districts and schools accountable for performance. For urban schools in high-poverty areas, reaching these goals is a daunting task, and many now face the possibility of being taken over by the state – even being shut down. At Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, MD, the expectations raised by NCLB have reached a critical point. Academy Award® winning filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond (I Am a Promise: The Children of Stanton Elementary School) offer a yearlong look inside a storied institution at a time when its very existence is in doubt. From cautionary profiles to triumphant tales, Hard Times at Douglass High serves as a reminder that education is inevitably an achievement of people, not policy."""
