   Saving Pelican 895
From Emmy® - winning filmmakers Marc Levin and Daphne, The Louisiana state bird – the brown pelican – spent 45 years on the endangered species list. After years of being relocated back to its natural habitat, the April 2010 BP explosion and oil spill ravaged the brown pelican’s nesting homes on the Gulf of Mexico. As oil rushed in at millions of gallons each day, seven thousand birds died as a result of the environmental disaster. Three months after the spill, cleanup workers rescued 894 birds. Saving Pelican 895 tells the gripping story of the rescue of one of the oiled bird victims, pelican “LA 895 (named after its state and rescue number), by the Fort Jackson Oiled Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Louisiana. Following LA895 on his heartfelt journey -- from his rescue as a young bird with oil-slicked feathers and little survival skills to his return to his natural habitat – the film intimately captures the marathon process that a life must endure to recover from such harsh conditions. This beautifully shot 39-minute documentary is as much about the effects of the spill on the brown pelican as a species as it is about the Louisianans who give their hearts and souls to help find and heal their state’s birds.

   Naughty Marietta
With their splendid voices, matinee-idol looks, vivacity (she) and stoutheartedness (he), Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were America’s Singing Sweethearts, “a true team, mixing the chemistry that permits one to accept disguised princesses, dream melodies and beautiful doom (Ethan Mordden, The Hollywood Musical). Naughty Marietta is their first film together, a blithe tale of a French princess who arrives incognito in colonial New Orleans and falls into the manly arms of a captain with one terrific baritone. The soaring Victor Herbert melodies – including Ah Sweet Mystery of Life and Tramp, Tramp, Tramp – became forever identified with the stars. This 1935 Best Picture Academy Award nominee and Oscar winner for Best Sound Recording remains a Hollywood milestone…and a total delight.

   Sweethearts
Broadway’s Gwen Marlowe and Ernest Lane are sweethearts, onstage as stars of Victor Herbert’s operetta and offstage as happily marrieds. Then Hollywood beckons, and their fretful stage producer puts the kibosh on any Tinseltown plans by trumping up a romantic triangle that sets the lovebirds feuding. The 24–karat Golden Age singing team of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy headlines a lavish, gossamer-weight box office smash glittering with songs that showcase their superb voices. Director W. S. Van Dyke II provides sophistication, the Dorothy Parker-Alan Campbell script provides rapier wit and the Oscar®-winning cinematography* provides proof the ravishing, red-haired MacDonald was born for Technicolor®.

Thank You Mr President Helen Thomas at the White
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House profiles the iconic journalist, a legend in political reporting, who has covered the White House and every president since John F. Kennedy. In this 38-minute film, Thomas, still as sharp as ever, sits down for a one-on-one interview in which she reflects on her storied career, the distinct personalities and foibles of the presidents she has covered, as well as some of the scandals that have rocked the White House over the years. Supplemented by clips of Thomas in action, plus archival photos and footage, the film offers a rare glimpse of a veteran member of the White House Press Corps, who was one of only a handful of female correspondents when she began covering the presidency in the 1960s. Idolized by many and despised by some, Thomas is without a doubt a determined and steadfast journalist, who maintains the utmost respect for the office of the presidency, while knowing it is her job to ask the tough questions.

The Last Truck Closing of a GM Plant
Documentary focuses on the workers of the General Motors Assembly Plant in Moraine, Ohio – which opened in 1981, and churned out an average of 280,000 small trucks and SUVs a year – from the announcement a year ago that the Plant will be closing, to its last day on December 23, 2008, just two days before Christmas. While the workers are shocked that they will be losing their jobs, we quickly see they are also losing much more: the pride they share in their work, the camaraderie built through the years, and the shared concerns about what their collective futures will hold. As the major industry in Moraine closes its doors for good, many see its demise as an indication of the changing American manufacturing landscape, which seems to be dying as products are increasingly being made elsewhere. The film offers a snapshot of a moment in America where we may be seeing the end of the blue-collar middle class.

This collection brings together three rarely seen treasures from Lucy's RKO days, giving modern audiences a chance to witness a star on the rise. Before she hitched her antics to Vincente Minnelli's The Long, Long Trailer, Lucy joined Joe Penner in 1938's romp Go Chase Yourself. After bank robbers use her husband's camper, Carol Meeley (Ball) sets out to prove her hubby is far too dumb to commit a crime. Lucy moved up to leading lady in Next Time I Marry. In order to claim her inheritance, heiress Nancy Crocker Fleming (Ball) must marry a ""plain American Joe."" So she does what any self-respecting debutante would do - she hires a husband. Rounding out the collection is 1941's Look Who's Luaghing, featuring a now glamorous Lucy. James V. Kern, who would later direct I Love Lucy, pens the tale, while screen pioneer Allan Dwan directs this rollicking satire which also stars Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy."

   Double Feature The Squaw Man
Cecil B. DeMille’s The Squaw Man is a first and a last. The 1914 version is widely regarded as the first feature film made in Hollywood. And DeMille makes the final film under his MGM contract with a 1931 Talkie of the oft-told tale (DeMille lensed a second silent version in 1918) about a British outcast in the West, his Native American bride and events that shatter their happiness. The films vary greatly. The first is packed with events – a horse race, a brawl with a Scotland Yarder, a shipboard fire, a night in New York – that foreshadow DeMille’s ambitious narrative reach. The second hones in on the tender and ultimately heartbreaking familial relationship. Same story. Same filmmaker. A rare chance to experience them in different ways.

Robert Taylor (Quo Vadis) and Stewart Granger (The Prisoner of Zenda) team up in this “grim, fierce, raw-boned outdoor fare (Variety) filmed on location in rugged Custer State Park, North Dakota. Charlie Gilson (Taylor), a mean-spirited hunter, joins reserved Sandy McKenzie (Granger) on a great government-sanctioned buffalo hunt that will keep the buffalo population under control and make the men rich. Joining them are Woodfoot, an old one-legged skinner (Lloyd Nolan) and Jimmy (Russ Tamblyn) a half-Indian boy. But trouble begins to break the team apart when Charlie kills a group of Indians whom he accuses of stealing his horses. Charlie’s subsequent mistreatment of the lone survivors – an Indian woman and her child – forces Sandy to realize that his partner is consumed with hate…and that he enjoys killing more than just buffalo. “Raw, real and rugged (L.A. Examiner), The Last Hunt is so intense and powerful that its stark images will stay with you long after the film ends.

Delightful screen farceurs Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds are up to their corpus delicti in laughs as a show-biz power couple with something to hide in director George Marshall’s (Destry Rides Again) sly black comedy highlighted by a meticulously plotted, hilariously botched “perfect crime. If The Gazebo reminds you of The Trouble with Harry or Family Plot, there may be a reason: when everything is going wrong, the anxious murderer queries Alfred Hitchcock on the phone for some authoritative what-do-I-do-with-a-dead-body advice. Comedy veterans Carl Reiner, John McGiver and Doro Merande also add to the macabre merriment.

Sinbad the Sailor blends live action and animation as Kelly dances his way into an Arabian Nights world after rubbing Aladdin’s Lamp. Showcasing talents from ballet companies of New York, Paris, London and Rome, this imaginative tour de force is a must-see for dance lovers everywhere!

   Virgin Soldiers The
"In Singapore in 1950, a crop of young British soldiers are trained in the arts of love and war in this darkly comic examination of the perils, tedium and confusion that dominate the day-to-day life in the ranks. Phillipa (Lynn Redgrave, Georgy Girl, The National Health), the daughter of British Sergeant Major Raskin, is the singular object for the sexual speculations of the raw recruits known as the ""virgin soldiers."" Although Phillipa responds to Private Brigg's (Hywel Bennett, The Buttercup Chain, The Family Way) overtures at a military dance, he is too drunk to consummate the act. When the more mature Sgt. Driscoll (Nigel Davenport, Chariots of Fire) also expresses an interest, he learns that, just like the boys he's training, Phillipa is a reluctant virgin. Newly remastered."
